Times are tough, but evidently not so tough New York couldn’t spend $21,000 on an antique Turkish rug for the governor’s mansion. That purchase came as Gov. David Paterson was ordering state agencies to cut spending and warning of dire economic hardships to come as budget deficits mount to $2 billion this year alone.

An Antique Toy Train Display to benefit Freehold Open Door, sponsored by the Sunrise Optimist Club of Freehold, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Knob Hill Golf Course clubhouse, Route 33 west, Manalapan. The display will feature more than 1,000 antique toy trains from the 1890’s to the 1950’s and operating layouts.
